‘Hello Sunday Morning’ Road Race 2018
“Hello Sunday Morning” encourages individuals to look at changing the pattern of their drinking by taking a break from alcohol & incentivising that break with goals e.g. taking up running/exercise. Further details can be found at http://www.hellosundaymorning.org/
In 2014 as part of Cork Drug and Alcohol awareness week the Cork Local Drug and Alcohol Task Force wanted to highlight the addition of alcohol to the task forces brief and support an evidence based alcohol specific initiative i.e. Hello Sunday Morning. The CLDATF organized a 4 mile road race to support and highlight the Hello Sunday Morning initiative in an attempt to further a health promotion and public health approach to alcohol consumption.
The event took place on the Sunday of the Cork Jazz weekend and was a hugely successful event with over 350 runners participating.
This year the race was originally due to take place on St Patrick’s weekend, another weekend that focuses heavily on alcohol consumption. However due to poor weather, the race was rescheduled and took place on Sunday June 17th. Again the race turned out to be another successful event with 236 runners participating.
This race was also supported by Healthy Ireland. Healthy Ireland is the national framework for action to improve the health and wellbeing of our country over the coming generation. Based on international evidence, it outlines a new commitment to public health with a considerable emphasis on prevention, while at the same time advocating for stronger health systems (Healthy Ireland Framework)
Former Cork City Marathon winner Cillian O’Leary took the men’s title with half of the top top 10 men coming from Leevale AC.
The first woman home was Carol Flynn of Leevale AC with Mallow AC taking the other two podium spots.
