North South Conference on Community Action on Alcohol, November 22nd 2018
This exciting conference will bring together community, voluntary, local government, youth and community sectors, drug and alcohol services and Task Forces, academics and policy makers to present the work of communities in tackling alcohol harm and to explore the huge power and potential that communities have in reducing harm.
Grass roots activists and locally based services committed to reducing alcohol harm in their communities both North and South will present on their work. They will be joined by an exciting line up of speakers including Senator Frances Black (Chair of Joint Oireachtas Committee on Alcohol), Andrew Misell (CEO of Alcohol Concern, Wales), Maik Dunnbeir (Director of Strategy and Advocacy, IOGT International), Dr Gillian Shorter (University of Ulster) and Ruairí McKiernan (social entrepreneur and campaigner)
A SAFER world, free from Alcohol Harm
We are also delighted to announce that the event will include an Irish launch of the new WHO led global initiative on reducing alcohol harm, SAFER. Maik Dunnbier was one of the founder members, representing civil society organisations on this global initiative will travel from Stockholm and will launch the initiative on the day.

This exciting one day conference will bring together community, voluntary, local government, youth and community sectors, drug and alcohol services and Task Forces, academics and policy makers to present the work of communities in tackling alcohol harm and to explore the huge power and potential that communities have in reducing harm.
There will be a number of workshops on the day to create space for delegates to learn about the work of communities and to share ideas, practice and lessons learned. This will include:

LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Improved and enhanced understanding of current practice in the development of evidence-informed community-based interventions to prevent and reduce alcohol harms in both jurisdictions
- Improved understanding among research and academic community of emerging promising practices and of the need to address the deficit in data on effectiveness of community-based interventions
- Improved understanding of the role and potential of communities in informing and supporting progressive policy change in alcohol policy
