The Cork Simon Outreach Project, supported by the Cork Local Drug and Alcohol Task Force (CLDATF) and the HSE, aims to eliminate rough sleeping and to minimise the impact of alcohol/drug use among the homeless population and those at risk of homelessness.   The Outreach Team uses a harm reduction and health promotion approach, working in a non-judgemental way to provide direct supports and advice to homeless people using substances in order to increase their awareness of the risks involved and to minimise the harms to themselves and others.

Services Provided

  • Outreach staff provide one-to-one engagement with people to assess their needs and level of substance use.
  • Information is provided on all aspects of addiction services and supports including: needle exchanges, safe injecting practices and safe disposal of needles; drug and alcohol treatment options such as addiction counselling, methadone programme, residential treatment options, community detox and abstinence programmes.
  • Support people in accessing emergency accommodation, social welfare entitlements, and medical and mental health supports through the HSE’s Adult Homeless Medical Team.
